Philadelphia Public Property, with oversight from Parks & Recreation, will manage the construction through general contractor
Donato Spaventa.
We expect the construction to be completed by the end of November, and that A Park
will be ready for full normal usage again in the spring of 2011.
We expect the Farmers
Market to continue along 43rd Street during the construction.
Events scheduled for A
Park, such as the August, September, and October Uhuru Flea Markets, will be moved
to B Park, south of Chester Avenue.
Please feel free to contact FoCP President Frank
Chance at (215) 551-8186 or friends@clarkpark.info, or Philadelphia Parks & Recreation
representative Barbara McCabe at Barbara.McCabe@Phila.gov, if you have any
questions.
The Friends of Clark Park and Philadelphia Parks & Recreation apologize
for
any inconvenience that this construction might cause.
Thank you for your continued
support of Philadelphia’s parks.

How will the Friends of Clark Park help renew
Park A?
The Friends’ overall strategy is to preserve this section of the park as a quiet, reflective place with a dense tree canopy, while also accommodating the area’s maintenance issues and current use. To do this we propose the following:
Reduce the number of paths to provide larger green spaces.
Incorporate water-management technologies, such as catch basins, tree wells, and a water garden, to reduce flooding.
Broaden sidewalks along 43rd street to accommodate the Farmers' Market.
Expand the central plaza using a loose fill of gravel.
Revise the lighting, plantings, and maintenance plan.
Why does Park A need my contribution?
Recently, Mayor Nutter announced a state grant, matched by the City, of $450,000 for Park A revitalization. Using this grant we will repair and replace battered pathways, lighting and turf; we also hope to construct a new Farmers' Market and central plaza. This will be the largest public improvement Clark Park has seen in 50 years and will help achieve the multi-million dollar 2001 Clark Park Revitalization Master Plan.
But the Friends of Clark Park must raise $75,000 quickly, to pay for the professional landscaping blueprint that secured this government funding. Studio/Bryan Hanes, landscape architects with a deep commitment to park users, provided the schematic plan but the Friends of Clark Park -- through your donations -- still must pay for overall design development and for construction and engineering documents.
The Friends are excited to be moving forward with a plan that respects the community, the environment and the history of our site.
You can help make this dream a reality by donating to the Park A Redesign Campaign! Make your check out to Friends of Clark Park, write "PARC" on the memo line, and mail it to the address above.
And please attend our board and membership meetings – which are always open to the public! The next meeting of the FoCP Board will be September 17, from 7 PM, at Rosenberger Hall, and the next general membership meeting will be October 15, from 7 PM at Griffith Hall on the USP campus.
